The Christmas List.

This year, not unlike last year, I have found surprising comfort in Christmas traditions including making the Christmas List. Yeah, I get it. It isn’t even Thanksgiving yet. But last year, after the election, my roomie and I could barely pick ourselves up (both literally and figuratively). We struggled hard. In the end, it wasn’t a person or thing that got us off our respective couches but rather Christmas lights, songs, baking, festive jammies, and decorating the apartment. We created the homiest and most cheerful of places to bundle ourselves in and we hoped that some Christmas magic could propel us forward while buffering us from what was going on outside our make-believe snowglobe. And it did in a way. Listening to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” on repeat, we let both the melancholy and yearning in the song move us along like something floating in the ocean.

It wasn’t graceful or perfect. There was no moment where we were better (I’ll let you know when that happens). But honestly, I don’t know what would have happened without those Christmas touchstones we surrounded ourselves with. So I’m doing it again. And from what I see on social media or simply driving down the street, I’m not alone. It seems like a lot of people are immersing themselves as early as possible in the season. That includes gifting. I love giving gifts so much and in my family, we are really asked to provide what we’d like within certain budgets for different people.

I’m not ignoring what’s going on in the world. I can’t. And yes, I’m posting about my Christmas list (it does have affliate links by the way). If nothing else, making it was a brief escape for my mind so I could have enough reserves to engage in the ongoing work. I just want to be super clear that this is not the time to completely avoid hard topics. We all have to engage in whatever ways we can when we can.

1. Letterfolk Felt Boards: This list is in no particular order but I really want this one. Ideally, I’d like the bigger one but also, I like to give price options. So I’d also love the smaller one. I’m digging gray but there is also black and white. Either way, I have just the place to put it.

2. Diorshow Mascara: Yeah, I like an expensive mascara and I swear by it. I typically like to ask for it for Christmas so my family has something to get me that I really use very regularly (I’d say every day but as a writer, I’m not putting on makeup every day…not going to lie to you).

3. Kate Spade Leopard iPhone 7 Case: I had this case for my old phone (it didn’t fit this newer one) and I loved the way my gold phone looked in it. It was just very me (or one facet of me). Love leopard? I put together some of my favorite leopard items here.

4. Sunday Riley Good Genes: I have fallen in love with this skincare brand. I actually tried this lactic acid treatment in this kit which was amazing because I also love the Luna Night Oil. But the investment for the full size is so worth it. I will definitely use this every day. They also now have another kit option with this and their vitamin c treatment that I love, love, love for skin brightening (The kit is called Pretty Bright Thing so…). That combo is bomb. But I’ve gone through Good Genes the quickest.

5. Savor It All Keepsake Box: So they have these for weddings, births and babies, and school years for the kids. I am just obsessed. I am so nostalgic so if without guidance I am sure I will hoard everything from the wedding. I love the idea of having all the important things organized in one place. I found this on the Home Edit’s Instagram. If you don’t follow them, they are amazing. Seriously. #Goals

6. Lorac Mega Pro Palette 4: When I was in college I had a Lorac Palette that my mom gifted me for Christmas. It seriously had the perfect colors for me and I kept it way longer than one should until my favorite colors were dust. Since then, I am always on the lookout for that perfect combo of colors in a palette. I didn’t find them until this (and it is on sale). This would literally replace every eyeshadow palette I have. Lorac shadows are also just great. I’m so excited about this and the makeup purge that would happen if I do get it. (For family members reading, I am 99% positive someone bought this for me already so…)

7. Sunday Riley UFO Set: Like I said, I love Sunday Riley. My skin has greatly improved. But I’d love to try this set specifically for acne prone skin (when will the threat of acne leave me?). These kits give you so much product for the money and allow you try someone. I am dying to try a Sunday Riley mask so this one seems ideal for me.

8. Lush Sleep Lotion: This has a cult following. People swear that you put this on and fall asleep 15 minutes later. So I am really hoping Santa puts this in my stocking. (And I also may gift it!).

9. Anthropologie Capri Blue Silver Candle: I don’t think there’s any question that I love this candle. It’s probably the one consistent thing I have talked about since this blog’s inception. Gah. But I love this scent so much. I have been keeping and collecting the jars of these for years (the $28.00 size) and last year when my roomie saw how many I had, she was ready to get the garbage bag. I was like, “No!” When she wanted to know why, I told her I would use them in my wedding. I hadn’t even met C yet and I wasn’t the type to have any picture of what my wedding would even be then! Ha. So now, I just need a few more once I collect from relatives (since getting engaged I have gifted this candle to people and been like, so there’s one catch. Can you give it back to me once you’re done with the candle? How ridic.) I’m so close to having enough for one at each table as a part of the centerpiece look. Plus, again, this is only my favorite scent in the world so I’d love to burn it for the sheer pleasure of that in the house.

Tell me what is on your list because I always have family members demanding I get a list together (which is so sweet) and it’s sometimes hard to come up with things. That’s why as many gift guides that there are this time of year, and yeah, I do get burned out on them, I still find them useful a lot of the time. So yeah, what are you asking Santa for?

Bridal Shower Inspiration: Flowers in Your Hair, Wood Watch on Your Wrist.

Bridal Shower Jord Here are the facts: Chelsea is one of my most stylish friends and she is getting married. She is one of those people who can slip in and out of trends, wear what inspires her, and just glows with beauty. And yes, she is getting married on top of it so she is glowing even more than usual. We’ve been friends for a long time and while I could have happily given her some china for her Bridal Shower but I wanted to something that was quintessentially her. Hello, wood watch for my California dreaming, flowers in her hair wearing, friend (and when I say wood watch, I obviously mean JORD). Full disclosure, this watch was given to me in exchange for a story about it.  But I’m obviously a fan because I have one myself that I told you about

Full disclosure, this watch was given to me in exchange for a story about it.  But I’m obviously a fan because I have one myself that I told you about here. And I don’t give my friends lame presents, so there.

chelsjord1

The vibe for the Bridal Shower inspiration: flowers in your hair, wood watch on your wrist. Are you feeling it or what? These watches would be such great wedding gift ideas for the couple or for bridesmaids gifts. The men watches are awesome too and would make such a unique groomsmen gift!

She loved her watch as much as I loved mine. I kind of let the cat out of the bag and told her what she was getting (oops) and I thought I would make it extra special with the cutest macaron wrapping paper and card. And it did make it more special.

chelsjord5

But what made it more unique and perfect? How seamlessly it blended into her style. How beautiful is she with her flowers in her hair (!), mixing metal and wood jewelry together? She’s like the girl in the magazine we all want to be.

chelsjord2

After the shower (I gave the watch to her early so she could wear it), she was looking at pictures and said the best thing a bride-to-be could say at her shower: “I felt so loved and felt beautiful too.”

chelsjord3

The best part of JORD wood watches is that they work for someone like me (I’m more classic with my style) and someone like Chelsea (an ethereal mermaid). I gave Chelsea this specific watch. She loved how light weight it was and how it felt on her wrist.

Chelsjord4

Sure, a few bangles would have been pretty but I think the watch took it to the next level. And I can’t wait for the next level of the Wedding shenanigans in June! I think the watch will probably make an appearance at the bachelorette party or rehearsal dinner…if not the ceremony. Ha!

AND GUESS WHAT? If you go to any of the JORD links provided anywhere here and enter your email, you could receive a $25 gift card (it’s not a lottery, but there is a limited amount!).

How beautiful is Chels? And isn’t the watch  perfection on her?

Not a Gift Guide: 5 Presents I am Actually Giving to People.

Let’s be honest, there are gift guides galore. You don’t want another one. Today I am showing you what I am actually giving people, as in I bought and paid for with my own money and wrapped all by myself. It’s not aspirational; it’s reality. The great thing is, the prices are great (and there is a lot on sale) because the fact is, between moving and other situations, I have to be very careful what I spend.5 Presents I am Actually Giving to People

I divided it up into five categories: Paper Goods, Beverage Related, Trinkets, Candles, Books. Come and see all the cool things. Here we go…5 Presents I am Actually Giving to People:

(You can click directly on the image or find the link).

1. Paper Goods

I love to get beautiful calendars for my friends. I happen to have a friend who loves everything Garance Doré does (it’s really beautiful work; you should check it out) who I found a Garance Doré desk calendar for her and another friend, who is receiving a coffee themed gift, is getting a  beautiful coffee and tea calendar. My friends and I seem to trade calendar gifts like these back and forth because once the month or year is over, you can easily frame your favorite or cut it out to send to someone (I plan on doing both with my 2015 calendars gifted to me).

The emoji stickers I just think are so much fun. Even though I am giving them away, I think they could make a great addition to my planner (or anyone’s) and are the right price for me.

2. Beverage Related

The city vignette mugs from Anthro have been making me do the heart eyes emoji all day every day. Yes, their options for monogramed mugs are also beautiful (gold ones here, classic black here, floral here…proving that Anthro doesn’t have to be out of your price range) but these mugs which depict cities I love, cities the people I love happen to love, are beautiful. Several people are getting these.

A bottle opener shaped in a state so you can remember where you came from? Done.

Finally, my dad was one of the hardest to shop for because I always try to spoil my parents and with my budget this year, I am not able to. So I was going to get him a Starbucks card (let’s not even get into how much Starbucks he drinks and how well they know him) and I still am but I am including this mug as well.

3. Trinkets

I love a good trinket and can prove it with the amount of bubble wrap and boxes packed full of them currently. These are some of my favorite. I love the animal planter (which has several animal options) where my friends or family can take care of an easy succulent.

Obviously, I love anything elephant related. The dish has my heart because it says “Forget me not” and as you know, an elephant never forgets. The ring holder is equally cute.

I love foxes. And I love that this has a lid. Also, if the person is particularly foxy, that is a bonus. It’s a super long story but one time, whenever I called a specific person, the song Foxy Lady played. I’ll take it.

Finally, the giraffe is one I own and adore myself. It’s practical to hold the jewelry I take off at night and also so very pretty.

4. Candles

You may think it odd that candles have their own category here but if you have been around long enough you know that the Capri Blue Volcano Candle (in any form) is my Oprah gift. As in, if I had my own show, it would be a part of my favorite things. I would also give them away as she did cars: You get a candle, You get a candle, and You, and You get a candle!

The regulation size Capri Blue Volcano Candle is a great gift for a hostess or anyone really. I have a relative who expects one every year and so this year, this is her present and it fits perfectly in my budget for her.

For my friends, who I wish I could spoil more, the Mini Capri Blue Volcano Candle is the perfect option and price. I am partial to the Rose Gold option and a lot of people are receiving that but I did go off book for a few people too when it came to the finish.

Also, you have to keep in mind that when the candle is gone (so sad) these containers can be placed in the freezer for a few hours and then the wax pops right out and a beautiful trinket container (or a container for anything) remains.

There are other great things that carry my favorite scent (diffuser, room and linen spray, soap, and more) but this year the hand cream is new and amazing. I wish I would have put it on my list to Santa. No, but seriously.

5. Books

Of course, if you know me at all, you know I am giving books as a presents.

This Jane Austen collection is to die for, personally. The set would be incredible but my friends will have to deal with getting one at a time from me because of my budget.

Last year, I gave my sister the Rifle Kid’s Classic, Little Women. This year, I am giving her A Little Princess. There are other options too (for instance, I was between A Little Princess and Heidi this year). While she isn’t old enough for these yet, they are beautifully made and someday, I hope she cherishes these stories as I did and do.

Coffee table books (in some cases literally) are always nice because I don’t think people buy them for themselves. I love Humans of New York as do most people I know so Humans of New York coffee table book was a great option as well as the Humans of New York Stories book. And the Barista Book fit right in with a theme I had going on with a present for friends.

**Please also do not forget to consider gifts like these that can really change the world.

By the way, these links are affiliate links. If you don’t know what that is or if you are scared of them, don’t worry. At no cost to you whatsoever (I promise!), by purchasing these things from my blog, it helps to support the running of my blog.

I am linking up for Five on Friday with April and Oh Hey Friday with Karli.

Look for an incredible story about Monday’s post (incredible, incredible) on Monday and have fab weekend, friends!

Brown Paper Packages 2.0 Thanks to Hallmark.

wrappingpaper4
Like the song says, I am a sucker for brown paper packages tied up in string. They happen to be some of my favorite things. Last year, I wrapped all of my packages this way and my younger brother made fun of  me (ask him how he wraps his presents…ha!) so I decided to add some pizzaz to my wrapping this year and make thing pop. To do so, I popped on over to Hallmark Gold Crown.

I think I have been pretty clear that Hallmark has it all when it comes to the holidays. They totally hit it out of the ball park when it came to my Christmas Cards and they didn’t disappoint with the wrapping paper either. I wanted to mix and match metallics with something classic and Hallmark more than delivered (they even had some brown paper too which mixed in with the metallics looks amazing!).wrappingpaper2If you know me, you may also know this fact. While I typically get my Christmas shopping done early (and I have), I lolly gag when it comes to wrapping. I enjoy wrapping one present but ten or twenty? No. But when I got home, I went on a wrapping spree because I found so many ways to mix it up with what I bought.wrappingpaper5The pretty wrapping paper inspired me to take my time and not rush the process. I enjoyed choosing which paper combinations would go with which present for each person. I love the classic richness of the Christmas Floral paper I chose with the fun metallics.wrappingpaper3I even got creative, as I am wont to do, because I was inspired by the paper. I used a page from a book I have multiple copies of to cut out a tree (tutorial coming soon…I am making garland…) and made a homemade tag for my friend. I feel like it adds a personal touch that’s charming against the grown up wrapping paper.wrappingpaper1Hallmark Gold Crown has not let me down this holiday season. I cannot wait to finish my Hallmark has it all and get them in the mail. And I cannot wait to pass out these presents and watch people’s faces as they open them. But I have to admit, I will dearly love the look of them under my tree until Christmas.wrappingpaperHow is your holiday shopping going? Have you popped into a Hallmark lately?

Perfect Hostess Gifts with Lovely Wrapping.

hostessgiftpinI grew up with a mom who taught me to write thank you notes. In fact, my packing list always includes them if I am staying with someone. I like to write it while I am there and then leave them for people to find. She also taught me about hostess gifts. Up until recently, my age exempted me from the hostess gift in most cases. My friends didn’t really have homes and I wasn’t visiting them for housewarming parties or dinner parties. But we grow up, you know?

I have six go to hostess gifts. I also use these as little gifts when the occasion falls for it. The reason there is six is because they never fail, especially for the price. (Okay, I have never given the elephant planter but I could not resist including it).

Let me give away a secret. They are all from Anthropologie. I wish Anthropologie was sponsoring this but they are not. It’s just that for my price range (the mugs start at $8,) I can get a friend something truly lovely and let’s be honest, they usually think it is more than $8 because it is from Anthro. There, now my secret is out.

When I was at the Influence Conference, I wanted to get my roommates a little something. It wasn’t a straight up hostess gift because who is the hostess of the hotel room? But it was a Hey-I’m-Glad-We’re-Rooming-Together gift, a gesture of goodwill. I gave them these Anthro mugs because I am on a budget with a capital B.hostess1

Just to give you some reference, the initial mugs are only $8 which seems pretty reasonable to me for a thoughtful gift. The city mugs–which include some of the best cities in the world: SF, Rome, NYC, Paris, London, more–are just a few dollars more. None of these mugs ever miss.

The candle below is my go-to gift for pretty much everything (there are two sizes). You may have heard me call it my Oprah gift because if I could I would buy you all one and say, “You get a candle, and you get a candle, and you get a candle!!”

The scent is divine. It is the best smell in the entire world. And the jars…When the candle is done (so sad), you simply put the galvanized container in the freezer overnight so that you can pop the little wax out easily and it’s a beautiful place to keep things. The biggest one I’ve included here (there is an even bigger one but I’ve never bought it) is the perfect amount for my aunt, who loves the candle too. I get her one every year. There is also a baby version (closer to the mugs prices) that would be a great hostess gift that comes in a variety of iridescent shades and galvanized silver (I just saw they now come in beautiful emerald and red…how perfect for the holidays!).

I don’t feel bad giving a candle (you know how a candle can be kind of impersonal) because this is the candle. Once you try it, you can never go back.

And yes, I sure did include the elephant planter. There is a giraffe and a zebra too. Why bring flowers and a bottle of wine when you could bring this with a succulent? It’s new so I can’t vouch for it the way I can for the mugs and candles but I can say: it’s an elephant planter.

Also, just want to share that Anthro is doing free shipping right now. Click below and shop those items or others.

Part of giving a great gift, in my opinion, is presentation. It’s not a matter of the look of things and wanting to be seen in a certain way. It just shows you went the extra mile and took care with those $8 mugs (also I just thought of this: what a great stocking stuffer to stick a gift card in?). I live in a studio apartment as I have mentioned 1000 times so I don’t have a wrapping paper room. Shocker, I know. I’ve found that brown kraft paper is great because you turn it into anything. I love the look of it with twine. In this case, I mimicked the initial theme of the mugs and tried to pick colors I thought or knew the girls liked. It was a blogging conference so I chose flowered paper because…my blog title.hostess2

I knew I had to include something elephant related so I cut out tiny cards in the shape of the elephant from that same paper and wrote a short note to each of them and tied it with twine to the mug handle. Then I tied everything up with twine because I like how it looks.

(I see this look at stores and it’s so expensive. Go to Amazon and I think I got the twine at Etsy. Please. It’s brown kraft paper.)

By the way, ignore the wet part of the brown paper in the photos. It was modgepodge and dried clear. Finally, I must keep it real. I ran out of the brown paper while wrapping these! So I rationed it out and gave them all an equal amount and then I told them the truth and we all laughed. See, things don’t have to be perfect. You just have to care.

I am always searching for the perfect gift for people. If I find it in June, I will buy it for Christmas. Check out my pinterest board for some really awesome DIYs and products!

Follow Flowers in my Hair | NB Creative Inc.’s board Gifts on Pinterest.
Aren’t those prices reasonable? Like I said, they are my go to all year round but not going to lie, they will come in handy at Christmas. What is your go to?
