Fave Fall Nail Polish.

Fave Fall Nail PolishLifetime achievement: a friend I see semi regularly via Facetime and visits recently told me, “This is the first time I’ve seen you without nail polish,” which means she thought I was the type of girl who kept her nails right and tight all the time (which would be an achievement). One of the first things I was chastised for in SF when I moved was not painting my nails everyday and though you may think me a liar, I am not which is how I figured out how to make my own at home manicure last nearly as long as a salon gel because time and money (am I right?) and also let’s just be honest those gel manis wreaked havoc on my nails.

One of the reasons I love fall besides the fail safe Pumpkin Spice Latte and the smell of autumn in the air is the nail polish. I am not kidding because though I like to keep it light and bright on my toes, I prefer darker colors on my nails because it makes me feel cool (like hipster barbie). Without further ado, my fave fall nail polish

OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques

This has been at the top of the list for several autumns. I found it and it was magic. I called my friend and said, I found a nail polish color you will love. And then she said: no way, because I found one you will love. And then together we said: it’s called You Don’t Know Jacques. I mean, it didn’t happen exactly like that (we didn’t speak on cue) but that did happen. A few days later, we saw our other best friend (I just finished watching The Mindy Project and I learned that the label “best friend” is a tier which I think is brilliant). Anyway, our friend had this gorgeous taupe, gray, chocolate color on her nails and we wondered: could it be? And it could. All three of us bought this color within a week of each other. All three of us have different skin tones, different nails, and different personalities and styles. And you want to know what? It looks great on all of us.

Essie’s After School Boy Blazer

Raise your hand if you buy nail polish based on its name? This was the case here but I fell in love with the deep navy, with a hint of indigo that varnished my nails. I love the midnight vibe. Guys, can I just tell you that I really want to paint my nails now?

OPI’s My Private Jet

Think velvety chocolate with a hint of sparkle. It’s grown up but with a flair and pulls in bits of maroon and red as well. This is an OPI classic that does not disappoint.

Essie’s Shearling Darling

I like a super deep red for fall and this one fits the bill most especially because it pulls in quite a bit of brown and maroon into it. I have quite a few reds but this is my favorite for fall and not just for it’s name. This makes me feel fabulous without feeling stuffy and is more chic than a loud red.

Essie’s Cashmere Bathrobe

Again, these names. I could go for a real cashmere bathrobe but in the meantime I really love gray on my nails. I really just love the color gray in general. This turns the volume up a bit with a bit of sparkle so it’s comfy like cashmere but also amazing like cashmere.

What’s your go to fall color? Do you wear any of these? And can I just suggest that a nail polish is always a thoughtful and quick gift to throw in the mail to a girlfriend or a sister or a daughter.

Ultimate Makeup Wish List (if money was mostly no object).

Ultimate Makeup Wish List (if money was mostly no object)
I love makeup but a tightening budget has me looking at makeup prices like: whaaa? Still, I do keep an ongoing list of products that I would buy if that bank account wasn’t under self imposed lock and key. Who knows? There are birthdays and Christmas and those times when you find fifty dollars on the sidewalk (okay, so the last one hasn’t happened to me).

These are all attainable products that I could purchase and you probably could (I’m not a celebrity who can take baths in La Mer) but right now when I am watching what I spend, they are remaining on a list.

Touche Eclat Blur Perfector

This is supposed to be amazing and worth every penny. It goes from balm to powder, is great for all skin types and tones, you can use it to set your makeup or all over to be one of those people with “perfect glowing skin.” Every blogger has raved about it. I read about it on beauty sites. It’s supposed to be amazing.

Anastasia Beverly Hills

I have been eyeing this for a long time (not sure if I would go for the cream or the powder option but a long time). I love highlighting and contouring and this kit is supposed to be bananas.

DiorShow Mascara

Confession: I used to exclusively wear this. It. is. amazing. in. every. way. But lately, you know, back to that whole money thing, I have been using up all my sample mascaras. I have not found one to match this. Benefit’s mascara compared to this is blech. MAC? Love their lipstick but just no. No. This is the best.

StriVectinLABS™ ‘Anti-Wrinkle’ Hydra Gel Treatment System

You put these pads on under your eyes for 15 minutes and then the gel after. They are supposed to be the holy grail for under eye bags and dark circles. It also sounds so relaxing. I’ve seen it all over IG and this was recipient of Allure Mag’s Best of Beauty.

SK-II Pitera™ Essence Set Pink Flower Limited Edition

Truth be told I have wanted to try SK-II whole face system for a long time. It is supposed to be amazing. I mean Cate Blanchett uses it. Have you seen Cate Blanchett’s skin? Apparently there is a limited edition set right now at Sephora that is more affordable. So I mean, maybe?

Giorgio Armani: Eyes To Kill Silk Eye Shadow

I’ve used this stuff on one of the brides makeup and it is amazing-ing-ing-ing. So is his foundation. His foundation is just…it maybe the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of applying on someone.

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

All summer all the bloggers have been talking about this. So obviously…

What is on your Ultimate Makeup Wish List? Or what have I missed on mine?

Five Fave Lipsticks for All Four Seasons.

fivefavelipsticksHere is the deal. It’s a known fact that you have to wear lipstick around Nonna. I mean, maybe you don’t have to but I have to and so does my aunt and my cousins. Because according to Nonna, lipstick takes anyone’s appearance up a few notches. So if you are just running out the door and your hair is wet? Put on some lipstick. If you are going to a formal event? Put on some lipstick. I don’t know when (which age) this rule started to apply to me but let me tell you, it does. Thankfully, I love lipstick. And I wear it whether or not I am seeing Nonna.

Gloss…has it’s place. My issue is that my hair is a crazy beast that attacks the gloss and in two minutes the gloss is gone. I do have some favorite glosses though that I will be sharing at some point but these five lipsticks are my old favorites that I am almost out of and some new favorites. Seriously, with these five shades, you are covered in the lipstick department. If you’re looking for a nude (well, that’s another post…Nonna would say: what’s the point of a nude lip? But I am not Nonna), give it time and I’ll get there.

You may have noticed that these are all MAC lipsticks. No, this blog has not been endorsed by MAC (I wish…?) I have just found that for the price (and their wide variety of colors) they have become my go to over the years. It wasn’t always this way but it is now. I mean, once upon a time I spent too much money on a YSL lipstick and it was a pretty case and the lipstick was nice but I didn’t finish it and I had to throw it away. I love MAC’s selection vs. price vs. how long it lasts. There is also no weird odor (which I am not into. Maybe you are?).

lipsticksamplesFor the record, it can be hard to take a picture of your own arm.

Without further ado, Five Fave Lipsticks for All Four Seasons:

1. Amplified Girl About Town

This may be one of MAC’s most popular lipsticks. It’s a color that looks great on most everyone because it seems to adapt to every skin tone. It’s definitely a pop of color but depending on you and what you’re wearing, it may have more magenta than pink or the other way around. This is the lipstick I actually use most often. It’s definitely a pick me up and also appropriate for the office. I am almost out of it so it hurt me to even do a swatch of it.

2. Matte Damn Glamorous (no longer available BUT try this: Dangerous)

And is it ever! This was actually gifted to me by Chels (only super good friends know how to pick a lipstick out for you). She said she wanted to get me a color I wouldn’t pick out for myself but that was still me. She nailed it. I love reds. There is nothing so glamorous as a red lip (am I my nonna’s granddaughter or what?). But this is matte, something I didn’t have. And it also has the tiniest bit of orange in it. Now, you may know that reds have either blue tones or orange tones running through them. Usually one is more flattering than the other and for me it is always blue. But this one is the perfect mixture. I love this lipstick! Apparently, since I just looked up the description, it’s a red with a bit of pink in it which makes it a bit softer, in my opinion. I think it depends on your coloring and the rest of your make up where you wear this but I rock it whenever I can.

3. Amplified Vegas Volt

In my mind, this is the perfect coral. It’s more subtle than my other picks but again, it seems to pick up the rest of your make up, outfit, and look. Sometimes I wear it and feel the volt of it. Other times, it is more subdued. I enjoy it for summer and fall (but also winter and spring). It just goes in my top five for sure.

4. Retro Matte Flat Out Fabulous

I had the conundrum of Girl About Town Running on fumes and I didn’t know whether I should replace it or try something new. I saw this on someone’s blog and I was a sucker. This is a little deeper, more matte, less sheer than Girl About Town. I’ve worn it in the summer and gotten plenty of compliments but I think it will be great for fall and winter (and who am I kidding? Spring, too). I’m still playing around with this and have even combined it with number five with great results.

5. Viva Glam Miley Amplified

I’ve wanted a pink for awhile. I have another one but you’l notice it didn’t make the cut. I wanted something young and hip but also appropriate for all types of things. This is nice and sheer and so you can layer it to make it really pop Miley style or leave it sheer for a touch of pink. I feel like this is one of those colors that truly looks gorgeous on any coloring or complexion. It’s limited edition so get yours when you can.

Bonus: I am no Kylie Jenner when it comes to over lining my lips. Ain’t nobody got time for that. But I do use one single color lip liner for every single one of these lipsticks (and all lipsticks). It’s MAC (I am not doing this on purpose, I swear!) Spice and it goes with anything. It’s also so subtle that I don’t need to be super precise when I am in a hurry!

Have you tried any of these? What is your go to year round lipstick?

Spa Night for $5 or less.

Spa Night for $5 or lessHere is the deal. I have champagne tastes on a beer budget. It’s just the way things are. I also have Nonna’s blood running through my veins that demands I find the best deal on things. Hence, my plan to create a Spa Night for $5 or less per person. It included: face, hair, and would have included nails if not for our fascination with the Harry Potter movie both of us have seen many times. But whatever.

Here’s what you’ll need:

-the ingredients for the hair masks (all of which you can find in your kitchen already)
-Shower Cap (dollar store)
-Face Mask (use what you have or try this one from target–cheap and easy)
-Cucumbers for your Eyes OR better yet these Cooling Eye Masks (we found at the dollar store as well…but if it’s isn’t still there…here is one)
-Bonus: for your nails, use what your have or try my DIY Gel ManiSpa Night for $5 or less 1You’ll also need girl talk, a movie you’ve seen before so it’s okay if you talk over, towels, dim lighting to complete the experience, some mood music if no movie (there is a spa Spotify station or you know, Enya). The thing is, I have to do these nights with another human because I get antsy. I can’t sit still. I think once my nails are painted it’s the perfect time to start cleaning up (spoiler alert…it’s not).

And can I tell you, the eye masks (which cool when you put them in the fridge) were an impulse buy but I am in love. As soon as I put it on, I heard cherubs singing. This spa night happened to take place in Florida but I was sure to bring that back with me and I might be wearing it as I type it. It is amazing and refreshing and just…trust me. It’s the little things, right?

One thing that I also recommend is a little champagne or cocktail to go around too. It ups the price tag depending what you get but we were just so exhausted that champs would have put us into a coma and we need to be ready for Harry Potter land the next day. I think instead we had greek yogurt with fruit. It was delicious and healthy in its own right so we just pretended we were at one of those uber healthy spas where there would be no alcohol.

Also, this is a super easy giveaway if you want to switch out the champs for Starbucks!starbucks-gift-cardgiveaway collage

3 Tips for Dressing Your Body Shape.

Hey guys! I’m Bex from Butcher’s Niche, a blog about finding the beauty in every day life, ok mostly I just share a lot about fashion. But that’s because I think what we wear is incredibly important to who we are as women, and how we present ourselves. So today I have some tips for you to get the most from your fashion choices.

IMG_0757

I’ve found that when women talk about their bodies, we automatically go to our size, our height, our weight. But we need to talk about our shape. All of our us are unique, and so are our bodies. Our shapes are going to determine our size, and our height/weight are just a part of our shape. So you see, our shape is most important when it comes to fashion.

Before we get onto the 3 tips, I really want to stress that we can’t let our bodies determine who we are as people–as women. We can’t change our shape. Sure, we can lose weight, our bra size might go down with that, as we get older we might get taller or shorter. But we can’t change our shape. These are our bodies that God gave us and we need to thank Him for them, take care of them out of our reverence to Him, and use them to spread His good word. Complaining about them and trying to change them is the complete opposite of what he wants from us.

But we all want to put our best foot forward, and look our best. Fashion can help with that. So here’s 3 tips for dressing your body shape . . .

1. Wear clothes that are your size –

Repeat after me: size doesn’t matter. size doesn’t matter. You have two women one is a DD and 5’5″ with an hourglass shape, one is 6” wedge shaped and a B cup – they probably wear the same size. A large shirt will be long enough for the tall girl and have enough fabric to stretch out for the DD’s. So if you think you’re a size 12, but that gives you a muffin top . . . buy a size 14. That size 14 will make those lumps disappear. Guess what, it’s ok. Because size doesn’t matter.

2. It’s all about contrast –

Why do you think black and white are so classic? They contrast each other. It’s all about balance, ladies. If your body is soft, add structure; if it’s angular, add softness. If you have a triangle shape, wear bright colored, patterned, full bottoms. Think hot pink circle skirt with a simple white spaghetti strap top. Contrast.

3. Create an Illusion –

Fabric and makeup works wonders, ladies. It can make people think they see something when they don’t. Apple shapes, wear v neck tops to create the illusion of a longer torso or wear a belt to create a waist. Rectangle shapes wear sweetheart cut tops to create the illusion of some cleavage and full skirts to create hips.

Nina, here. It’s no secret that I love Bex and we are real life friends. This is post truly captures the things people love about her: her sense of humor, her love of fashion, her ability to break down a topic so it’s easy to understand (like when I call her for organization help?), and the fact there is a heart behind what she does (in this case helping women dress for their shape). I love her Get it, Girl attitude. Make sure to check out her blog. You’ll fall in love because that’s how I met her and ten months later I was staying at her house for a week. You’ve been warned.
